Former Super Eagles captains Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha and Mikel Obi have arrived Marrekesh, Morocco, for the coronation of Victor Osimhen as King of African football for 2023, Score Nigeria reports.

CAF announced the Eagles stars will join many other African football legends at the awards ceremony tomorrow night in Marrekesh.

The stars of yesteryears include Samuel Eto’o, Patrick Mboma (Cameroon), Abedi Pele (Ghana), El Hadji Diouf (Senegal), Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo), Jonathan Pitroipa (Burkina Faso), Kalusha Bwalya (Zambia), Ahmed Hassan (Egypt) and Perpetua Nkwocha (Nigeria).

Some of these stars of the past will today feature in a charity game in honour of victims of a recent earthquake in Morocco.

Osimhen is up against Ashraf Hakimi (Morocco & PSG) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt & Liverpool) for the men’s CAF Player of the Year, while Asisat Oshoala will battle Thembi Kgatlana (South Africa) and Barbara Banda (Zambia) for the women’s version.

CAF said this year’s award period under consideration runs from November 2022 to September 2023 for the men’s categories and from December 2022 to November 2023 for the women’s categories.

There are awards for 14 categories and three nominees for each category.

The ultimate winner of each category is decided following votes from a panel consisting of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals from Member Associations, Head Coaches & Captains of Member Associations and clubs involved in the group stages of the Interclub competitions.

The Awards Gala will take place on Monday, 11 December 2023, at the Palais des Congrès, Movenpick, Marrakech, Morocco at 19H00 local time (18H00 GMT).
