Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has suspended his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Mr. Wale Ajetunmobi, over a controversial post on X, formerly Twitter.

The announcement was made in a statement released on Tuesday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.

The statement, titled ‘Governor Sanwo-Olu Suspends Aide,’ explained that the suspension followed a misrepresentation of facts posted by Ajetunmobi on his personal account. The governor’s office emphasized that the Sanwo-Olu administration strongly opposes extra-judicial punishments, reaffirming that such actions do not align with the government’s principles.

The controversy stemmed from a now-deleted tweet by Ajetunmobi, posted under the handle #Riddwane. In the tweet, he claimed that individuals who set Television Continental, TVC, ablaze during the 2020 #EndSARS protests had been “hunted down and executed.” He further alleged that one of the arsonists, a young trader in Ketu, was found with an AK-47 rifle.

The tweet ignited public outrage, with users questioning the claim of extra-judicial killings. In a follow-up tweet on Tuesday, Ajetunmobi admitted that the term “executed” was “erroneously used” and clarified that the post reflected his personal opinion, not the government’s stance. He insisted that no extra-judicial actions were implied and that the tweet was taken out of context.

The incident revisits the 2020 attack on TVC, where arsonists destroyed the station’s state-of-the-art equipment, vehicles, and facilities, leaving over 500 employees displaced.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s swift action reflects his administration’s commitment to accountability and ethical communication within his government.
