The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu has tasked his men to unravel those behind the attempted murder of Accord Party Chairman in Osogbo Local Government Area, Ashimiyu Ajibola on Wednesday night.
Osun Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the attack occurred late on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, along the MDS area of Osogbo. According to him, two-armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on Ajibola before fleeing the scene.
Ojelabi said police operatives responded immediately after receiving a distress call, deploying tactical and conventional teams to the area. He added that officers evacuated the victim to a medical facility, where he is receiving treatment.
“Medical personnel have confirmed that Hon. Ajibola is in a stable condition and responding positively to treatment,” Ojelabi said.
He further disclosed that police teams launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, while exhibits recovered at the scene are being subjected to forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan condemned the attack and ordered a high-powered investigation to uncover those behind it.
Eyewitness accounts said the gunmen fired several shots at Ajibola and his associates while they were travelling in a blue Toyota Corolla around the Osogbo Community Bank axis of the MDS area, causing panic among residents.

One of the occupants of the vehicle said the assailants trailed them before opening fire in a commando-style operation.
“We were coming from the MDS area of Osogbo when the gunmen suddenly chased us and released a volley of bullets at our car,” the witness said. “We managed to escape to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters, where we sought protection before the attackers fled.”
The witness added that the matter was reported to the police and that the injured party chairman was rushed to the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital in Osogbo for treatment.
Reacting to the incident, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, condemned the shooting and called for a thorough and professional investigation.
“It is an unfortunate incident which should not be allowed to go un-investigated. The culprits must be brought to book,” Alimi said.
He added that available indications suggest the attack may have political undertones and urged security agencies to leave no stone unturned in identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
