Akin “Akin Shuga” Tofowomo, award-winning musician, bandleader and founder of the celebrated Shuga Band, has died at the age of 50.

His family confirmed his passing in a statement shared on his official Instagram page on Monday, noting that he died in New Brunswick, Canada, where he had been receiving care.

Though the family did not disclose the cause of death, the announcement immediately sparked an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans, colleagues and admirers across the entertainment sector.

Many described his death as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s live band culture, which he helped elevate through decades of memorable performances.

Akin Shuga was widely respected not just for his musical brilliance but for his remarkable life journey. Having survived polio as a child, he went on to become an emblem of resilience, self-belief and creative reinvention.

He often spoke openly about his disability, using his platform to advocate for inclusion, inspire people living with disabilities, and encourage young musicians to embrace their uniqueness.

Under his leadership, Shuga Band became one of Nigeria’s most sought-after live bands, performing at high-profile weddings, corporate events, state functions and major concerts.

The band’s blend of energy, musicianship and versatility earned it a loyal following and established Akin Shuga as one of the vibrant pillars of live entertainment in Lagos and beyond.

Beyond the stage, Tofowomo built a reputation as a “musicpreneur” a forward-thinking creative who understood the business of music as deeply as its artistic expression.

He mentored up-and-coming performers, collaborated widely, and championed professionalism in the events and entertainment sector.

Tributes have poured in from across the industry, with many praising his generosity, humility and commitment to excellence.

Colleagues recalled his infectious enthusiasm, warm personality and ability to light up a room long before he even stepped on stage.

Fans described him as a joyful spirit who made celebrations unforgettable with his signature voice, charismatic presence and soulful delivery.

As his family, friends and the entertainment community mourn his passing, many say his legacy will endure through the countless memories he created, the lives he touched, and the music that will forever carry his name.
