DR Congo clinched a place in the CAF World Cup qualifying play-off final after defeating Cameroon 1-0 on Thursday.

Both teams entered the match with high stakes, knowing that a win would move them one step closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Cameroon started brightly, applying early pressure and attempting to dictate the tempo, while DR Congo responded with quick transitions and solid defensive organisation.

Despite several promising attacks from both sides, goal-scoring opportunities were limited, as each defence held firm. The match remained goalless deep into the second half, with frustration growing on both benches.

The breakthrough finally arrived when DR Congo’s veteran defender Chancel Mbemba showcased his experience and sharp instincts. After a scramble inside the Cameroonian penalty area, Mbemba reacted fastest, pouncing on a loose ball and firing decisively into the net. His goal sent the Leopards’ supporters into celebration and shifted the game’s momentum.

Cameroon, faced with elimination, intensified their efforts in the final minutes. They pushed bodies forward, delivered dangerous crosses, and tested DR Congo’s back line with relentless pressure. But the Leopards remained disciplined, showing impressive composure and defensive resilience to see out the result.

The narrow victory marks a significant milestone for DR Congo, who have been steadily rebuilding their squad and strengthening their tactical identity. Their progression to the final stage of the CAF play-offs sets up a high-stakes showdown with Nigeria  a clash that will determine who advances to the inter-confederation play-offs for a chance to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For Cameroon, the defeat brings disappointment, ending their qualifying campaign earlier than expected. For DR Congo, however, the dream is still alive as they move a step closer to returning to the world’s biggest football stage.
