The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Bukola Olopade, says the commission’s strategic priorities are fully aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s broader national agenda for sports development.
Olopade made this known on Wednesday in Calabar at the opening of the technical session of the 2nd National Council on Sports, an annual gathering that brings together key stakeholders from across the country to review policies and chart the direction of Nigeria’s sports sector.
He said President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda places strong emphasis on youth empowerment, job creation, national unity and social cohesion objectives which, he noted, can be significantly advanced through sports.
“These targets can all find strong expression through sports. That is what we seek to achieve at the National Sports Commission,” he said.

The Director-General explained that the NSC has continued to implement reforms aimed at transforming the nation’s sports landscape. These include strengthening institutional frameworks, prioritising athlete welfare, upgrading sports infrastructure and promoting sports commercialisation to unlock revenue streams and stimulate the sports economy.
He added that the ongoing technical session would provide the foundation for policy decisions and recommendations that will shape the future of sports development in Nigeria.
Olopade urged participants including directors of sports, commissioners, administrators and other stakeholders to demonstrate commitment to the goals set out in the president’s agenda, stressing that collaborative effort was essential for lasting progress.
In her remarks, Agnes Atsu, the Commissioner for Sports in Cross River, described the session as a fertile platform for generating innovative ideas to accelerate sports growth.
Atsu reaffirmed the state’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to national sports development, noting that Cross River remained ready to support the implementation of strategic initiatives agreed upon at the council.
