President Bola Tinubu has approved the formation of Nigeria’s delegation to the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group. The initiative aims to enhance strategic cooperation with the United States in tackling persistent security challenges across the country.

According to a statement released in Abuja by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu will lead the Nigerian delegation. Ribadu’s role underscores the administration’s emphasis on intelligence-led security reforms, counterterrorism coordination, and improved international information sharing.

The delegation comprises a multi-stakeholder team drawn from key institutions, including the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the NSA, and other security agencies involved in counterterrorism, cyber defence, and national strategic planning. Officials say the composition reflects the administration’s commitment to a holistic approach to national security.

The U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group is designed to enhance cooperation on several fronts, including counterinsurgency operations, border security, weapons tracking, police reforms, and the deployment of advanced technology to curb terrorism and transnational crime. The platform also focuses on capacity-building programmes to support Nigerian security forces.

Analysts note that Nigeria’s engagement with the United States comes at a critical moment, as the country grapples with persistent threats such as banditry, insurgency, oil theft, kidnapping, and cyber-enabled crimes. More coordinated intelligence and international support, they argue, are essential for long-term stability.

The Presidency stressed that the Tinubu administration seeks deeper partnerships that will translate into actionable outcomes not just diplomatic engagement. Officials believe that the working group will facilitate operational cooperation, technology transfer, and long-term strategic support.

The delegation is expected to depart for the United States soon to begin high-level discussions that will set the framework for enhanced security collaboration between both nations.
