The Police Service Commission, PSC, has approved the appointment of Mr Mohammed Gumel as a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG, and elevated hundreds of senior officers following a comprehensive promotion exercise.
The decision was announced on Thursday in Abuja by the Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the commission, Mr Torty Kalu, who said the approvals followed rigorous written examinations and oral interviews overseen by the PSC Chairman, Mr Hashimu Argungu.
Before his elevation, Gumel served as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, in charge of the Community Policing Project, Research and Planning, a role in which he was involved in strengthening police–community relations and policy development.
In addition to the appointment of the new DIG, the commission promoted seven Commissioners of Police,CPs, to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.
The newly promoted AIGs are Ihebom Chukwuma, Maxwell Olatokunbo, Abaniwonda Olufemi, Alonyenu Idu, Lawal Ayodeji, Agene Emmanuel, and Vungmoh Kwaimo.

Thirteen Deputy Commissioners of Police were also elevated to the rank of CP. They include Babalola Johnson, Ali Fage, Cyril Obiozo, Adepegba Adetoye, Tabitha Bako, Ofem Arikpo, Edwin Ogbeghagha, Audu Bosso, Samuel Gimba, Alhaji Danladi, Richard Gara, Lasisi Titilola, and John Obiuagbaka.
The commission also approved the promotion of 30 Assistant Commissioners of Police to the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police, 51 Chief Superintendents of Police to Assistant Commissioners of Police, and 542 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendents of Police.
In addition, 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police were promoted to Superintendents of Police, while 12 Assistant Superintendents of Police were elevated to the rank of Deputy Superintendents of Police.
Congratulating the newly promoted officers, PSC Chairman Hashimu Argungu urged them to rise to the demands of their new ranks with renewed dedication and professionalism.
He reminded them that promotion comes with higher expectations and called for greater commitment to effective policing.
