Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso may have endorsed the planned defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and key members of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Kwankwaso, the national leader of the NNPP, confirmed his new position in a short video that surfaced on Facebook on Tuesday. The video was shared by his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan.
The former minister had recently accused Yusuf and other NNPP office holders of reneging on the mandate bestowed on them by voters, insisting the party structure must remain intact.

But speaking on Tuesday, the NNPP leader said he reconsidered his position to allow members exercise their political freedom and to stem rising friction within the party in the state.
Meanwhile, the former Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party in Kano State, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, has urged elected officials and political appointees on the platform of the party to remain steadfast in government and enjoy the dividends of their hard work.
Dungurawa in an interview with journalists in Kano, said the message was conveyed on behalf of the NNPP National Leader, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso. He said party members who contributed to the success of the NNPP at the polls deserve to reap the benefits of their collective struggle.
Quoting Kwankwaso, Dungurawa said, “Stay where you are because you have laboured for the success of our party.”
He said that the statement was aimed at reassuring elected officials and political appointees amid speculations and political realignments within the state and at the national level.
He further emphasised that Kwankwaso remained firmly committed to the NNPP and had no intention of defecting to any other political party.
Dungurawa said the national leader’s position was clear and unequivocal, stressing that loyalty and discipline remain core values of the party.
The former state chairman cautioned NNPP members against being distracted by rumours or external pressures, urging them instead to focus on governance and service delivery to the people.
He said the party leadership expected its representatives in government to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate.
Dungurawa also called on party stakeholders to continue working in unity to strengthen the NNPP in Kano State and beyond, adding that internal cohesion was essential for consolidating the party’s achievements and sustaining public trust.
He expressed confidence that with continued loyalty and commitment, the NNPP would remain a strong political force, capable of delivering good governance and fulfilling its campaign promises to the people.
