The 8 Division Nigerian Army has graduated 27 newly trained drone pilots as part of efforts to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen intelligence gathering in ongoing security operations in the Northwest.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Friday, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division / Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said the graduation ceremony, held at the Division Training School, Giginya Military Cantonment in Kaduna, marked a key milestone in the Army’s drive to integrate modern technology into its operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

The General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force, Northwest, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, said the initiative reflects the Army’s growing reliance on technology-driven warfare and improved force protection.

“The integration of drones into our operations is no longer optional; it is a necessity,” Koughna said. “The true strength of any military force lies not just in acquiring advanced equipment, but in effectively integrating them into our operational systems.”

He explained that unmanned aerial vehicles provide troops with improved situational awareness, reduce operational risks, and enhance decision-making on the battlefield.

“The use of drones allows us to scout ahead, conserve resources, and reduce unnecessary exposure of our personnel to danger,” he added

Earlier, the Course Coordinator, Captain Samuel Yakubu, described the training programme as a strategic initiative designed to improve frontline capabilities through technology.

“This training was a visionary initiative aimed at giving our troops eyes in the sky,” Yakubu said. “It has significantly enhanced the operational effectiveness of personnel across different formations within the Division’s area of responsibility.”

According to him, “27 personnel drawn from various units under the Division participated in the rigorous training programme, which combined theoretical instruction with practical exercises.”

The trainees were taught drone navigation using offline maps, aircraft assembly and disassembly, ground control station setup, surveillance operations, and aerial imaging techniques, as well as takeoff and landing procedures, tactical manoeuvres, and precision landing exercises.

The course concluded with a practical demonstration in which the newly qualified drone pilots showcased surveillance hovering, gimbal control, aircraft handling, and accurate coordinate acquisition, earning commendation from senior officers in attendance.

At the end of the exercise, the GOC presented wings to the graduating pilots and awarded cash prizes to outstanding participants who distinguished themselves during the training.
