Two female students who had just completed their West African Examination Council, WAEC, examinations have died in a fatal road accident in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The motorcycle conveying them collided with a moving truck along the busy Choba Bridge axis of the East–West Road.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, also claimed the life of the commercial motorcyclist, bringing the total number of fatalities to three.

Eyewitnesses said the victims were returning from Odoha Community Secondary School in Emohua Local Government Area, where they had gone to sit for their WAEC examinations earlier in the day.

The school is located about 30 minutes from the crash site, which is near the Choba axis, a densely populated area that serves as the gateway to the University of Port Harcourt host community.

According to witnesses, the motorcycle carrying the students collided with a moving truck under circumstances that are still being investigated.

One eyewitness described the scene, saying: “The students were coming back from Odoha Community Secondary School after writing their WAEC exams. It happened today. Three people died: one okada rider and two WAEC female students.”

Emergency responders and bystanders rushed the injured victims to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Several other individuals reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash, though details of their conditions were still being assessed at the time of filing this report.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify all victims and notify their families.

Officers from the Choba Divisional Police Headquarters have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Preliminary reports suggest that the collision involved a speeding truck and a motorcycle conveying the students, but officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause.

Police authorities have urged residents to remain calm while assuring the public that a full investigation will be conducted to determine what led to the tragic incident.

The Choba axis of the East–West Road has long been known for heavy traffic and frequent accidents, raising renewed concerns about road safety, especially for students and commuters who rely heavily on motorcycles for transportation in the area.

The latest tragedy has once again highlighted calls for improved traffic regulation, better enforcement of safety standards, and urgent infrastructure improvements to reduce the risk of further loss of lives.
