The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has defended the conduct of its governorship primary, insisting that Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Salihu Yakubu Danladi, emerged through a valid and transparent process conducted in line with party guidelines.
In a statement issued on Monday by the State Publicity Secretary, Alhaji A.O. Babatunde, the party said the primary was supervised by representatives of the APC National Secretariat and relevant security agencies, dismissing claims that the exercise did not take place as “a deliberate falsehood.”
The statement was a response to a press conference by a group identifying itself as the “Kwara State APC Elders Caucus,” which had questioned the legitimacy of the primary and the acceptability of the party’s candidate.
According to the APC, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as leader of the party in the state, acted in consultation with the National Working Committee (NWC) and other stakeholders to preserve unity and ensure the emergence of what it described as the party’s strongest candidate. The party also rejected allegations that key stakeholders were sidelined, saying consultations were held across the three senatorial districts before and after the primary.
The party further described Danladi as “popular, strong, and acceptable to Kwarans,” portraying him as a tested administrator and experienced lawmaker with broad support among party members and stakeholders across the state.
On claims that unnamed presidential aides were attempting to impose an unpopular candidate, the APC said the allegation was reckless and unsubstantiated, warning against dragging the Presidency into what it called internal party matters in Kwara State.
The party also used the statement to disown the group behind the press conference, saying the so-called “Kwara APC Elders Caucus” has no official recognition within the party. It clarified that its recognised elders’ caucuses exist only at the senatorial district level, adding that only the Kwara Central Elders Caucus had so far been inaugurated, while those for Kwara North and Kwara South were yet to be constituted.
Reaffirming its commitment to party unity ahead of the 2027 elections, the Kwara APC urged members and the public to disregard the claims made by the group and remain focused on the party’s agenda in the state and nationwide.
