Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, on Friday commissioned the new National Headquarters of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, NRCS, in Gwarinpa, Abuja, reaffirming support for humanitarian service delivery across the country.

Mrs. Tinubu, who was recently invested as the first Grand Matron of the society, donated ₦100 million to support staff and volunteers in their activities.

“I thank the National President of the NRCS, Mr. Oluyemisi Adeaga, for inviting me to be part of this event. I also thank the Society for the honour of my investiture as the Grand Matron of the Society yesterday at the State House.

“The commissioning of this new office building is a testament to the enduring commitment of the Nigerian Red Cross Society in alleviating human suffering and bringing hope to the most vulnerable.

“I am confident that this new office building will further strengthen the Society’s capacity to coordinate its humanitarian activities, enhance operational effectiveness, and deepen its impact across Nigeria,” she said.

The First Lady said that the impact of the society’s humanitarian activities extended beyond Nigeria’s borders and remained invaluable to vulnerable populations.

“Whether providing first aid or responding to disasters, supporting victims of conflict, promoting health and well-being, or providing humanitarian assistance to communities in need, the Society has remained steadfast in its mission of serving humanity without discrimination.

“I commend the leadership, staff, partners and volunteers of the society for their dedication and sacrifice.

“Your selfless service continues to make meaningful difference in the lives of countless individuals and families.

“At this juncture, to the glory of God and for the benefit of mankind, I hereby officially commission the National Headquarters of the Nigerian Red Cross Society,” she said.

Earlier, the National President of the NRCS, Mr. Oluyemisi Adeaga, thanked the First Lady for her support, noting that the new headquarters would position the organization for greater impact and opportunities.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the Grand Patron of the society, for supporting efforts to provide a befitting facility for humanitarian operations and research activities.

“We want to say that now, we need you more, because this is the time we are supposed to come together and ensure that humanity is served appropriately.

“Today, Nigeria is undergoing a lot of challenges in the areas of humanity. There are a lot of people in captivity, a lot of people are challenged by hunger and the threat of climate change.

“In the past 66 years, the NRCS, which is the offspring of the British Red Cross, has been serving humanity in spite of several challenges, especially in the area of funding. We shall continue to strive,” Adeaga said.

Also speaking, Doris El Doueihy, Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, in Nigeria, pledged the organization’s continued commitment to humanitarian assistance in the country.

“Our focus is on providing aid, healthcare and protection to people affected by armed conflict across the North-East and North-West regions.

“I would like to congratulate the NRCS. Today is about creating a platform for humanitarian action and ensuring that Nigerians benefit from the support of the Red Cross,” she said.
