Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is not at the World Cup, but the 2026 tournament has arguably made him a star anyway.

After featuring in a pre-Mundial friendly against Portugal, the 26-year-old Udinese shot-stopper has become a global internet sensation, drawing admiration from celebrities including American music legend Toni Braxton and BBC actress Sarah Hadland, winning over millions of female fans without playing a single minute of the competition.

Okoye, who plays his club football for Udinese in Italy’s Serie A, has taken over the internet in a manner that even the most decorated players at the competition have struggled to match.

The attention has come from every corner of the globe, reached the level of celebrities including American music legend Toni Braxton and Miranda actress Sarah Hadland, and has left the 26-year-old goalkeeper himself genuinely lost for words.

It all started on June 10, during a pre-tournament friendly between Nigeria and Portugal in Leiria. Nigeria lost 2-1, and Okoye made four saves across 90 minutes. But none of that mattered to the internet.

What mattered was the pre-match presentation, when broadcast cameras panned across the Nigerian squad and lingered on the tall, light-skinned goalkeeper with the sharp jawline, the tattooed arms and the kind of facial structure that social media users across four continents immediately lost composure over.

Phrases such as “Dear readers, I am pleased to inform you that we are witnessing the diamond of the season,” “Block me, I am married,” and “When does Nigeria play?” swept across platforms within hours of the match, contributing to what became one of the most unexpected viral phenomena of the entire 2026 World Cup cycle.

The cruelest irony, of course, was the answer to that last question — Nigeria is not playing. The Super Eagles were eliminated in the African play-off against the Democratic Republic of Congo, who edged through on penalties.

A social media post by the X account @blackishpress tracking the viral reaction generated over 3.8 million views, 43,000 likes and 3,600 saves within 24 hours.

A follow-up post featured photographs of Okoye without a shirt, displaying the tattoos that run across his arms, chest and back, and the reaction only intensified.

One X user, Matthias Schmidt, captured the spirit of many male internet users when he responded plainly, “Delete this please, my wife is on this app.” Another user noted with a certain weariness, “Maduka Okoye always goes viral for this lol,” confirming that this was not new territory for the goalkeeper, just a significantly larger audience.

At 26 years old, Okoye was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a French German mother. He speaks six languages fluently and has been appointed as an ambassador for Enugu State in Nigeria, where he aims to establish charitable foundations and a football academy for local youth. He stands 1.9 meters tall, which is 6 foot 6 inches, a detail that has featured in almost every viral post about him.

The attention quickly outgrew football Twitter and spilled into mainstream entertainment. American R&B icon Toni Braxton was drawn into the conversation when a young woman shared a video of her elderly mother visibly overcome by footage of the goalkeeper. Braxton responded with characteristic warmth, writing, “Whose momma is this? I love her. Her and my mom should be friends.”

Ashley Camille, a Los Angeles-based digital creator who covers pop culture and fandom events, issued what amounted to a public apology after publishing a feature on the most attractive players at the World Cup without including the Nigerian goalkeeper.

“He is not technically in the World Cup, but who cares,” Camille said. “Maduka Okoye is 6-foot-6 and he speaks six different languages. I said it once and I will say it again, football players are the hottest of any sport, period,” she added, pausing between words for deliberate effect.

The X account @El_lahh observed what was happening on the other side of the Atlantic with equal parts amusement and certainty, “The girlies on American TikTok are drooling all over Maduka Okoye.”

Then came perhaps the most high-profile admission of all. British actress Sarah Hadland, best known for her role in the BBC sitcom Miranda, appeared on ITV’s This Morning alongside Stephen Mangan and Ardal O’Hanlon to promote their West End play The Truth.

The conversation drifted towards the World Cup, and Hadland became visibly animated. “I will be watching now that I have seen the Nigerian goalkeeper. Have you seen him? Wowee, thank you very much!” she exclaimed.

“I mean, he is absolutely gorgeous. I do not care if he can do Shakespeare. Looking lovely in a tight top, thank you.”
