A yet-to-be-identified hit-and-run driver has caused the death of a 19-year-old woman, Rebecca Kambai, a 500-level student at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State.

A family source disclosed that Rebecca had just returned home from school for the holidays when she met her untimely death in the fatal crash, which occurred on Tuesday evening.

According to the source, Rebecca had forgotten some of her belongings at school and arranged with her friends, who sent them to her from Azare.

It was further disclosed that when the driver conveying the items arrived at the Bauchi motor park near Awala Hotel, he called Rebecca to collect them, and one of her brothers took her there on a motorcycle

After collecting the items and while on their way back home, Rebecca chose to ride the motorcycle. On reaching the Police Officers’ Mess along the Bauchi-Jos Road, just as they were about to turn into their neighborhoods in the New GRA, a Sharon minibus hit the motorcycle.

Rebecca was said to have struck her head on the road surface, sustaining a fractured skull that led to her death on the spot, while her brother sustained injuries.

A First Information Report, FIR, on the road traffic crash issued by the RS12.1 Bauchi Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, indicated that the crash occurred on July 14, 2026, at 5:15 p.m. The incident was reported at 5:20 p.m., while FRSC personnel arrived at the scene at 5:30 p.m., recording a response time of 10 minutes. The crash occurred along the Bauchi-Jos Road in front of the Police Officers’ Mess.

The crash involved a Jincheng motorcycle with registration number TFB-38-QB, which was being used for private purposes.

According to the FIR, two persons, one adult male and one adult female, were involved in the crash. The male sustained injuries, while the female died.

Items recovered from the scene included one motorcycle, one women’s hair stretcher and one pair of shoes.

The injured victim was evacuated to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH, for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited in the hospital’s mortuary. The rescue operation was led by MI III CT Galadima.

Reacting to the incident, Rebecca’s mother, Mrs Doris Kambai, said, “I am the mother of Rebecca, whom we just lost yesterday. It is truly a time of grief for the whole family. My daughter, my last baby, will be greatly missed.”

According to her, “She was actually my favorite, and the siblings even know that. She took after me in so many ways, and I have been so proud of her. She was such an intelligent and brilliant girl. Her coming into my life was truly a blessing.”

The grieving mother added, “Ever since she came into my life, so many things changed, and for that I am so grateful. Well, there is nothing we can do about it. God gives and He has taken away. May His name be forever praised.”

She further said, “I want to appreciate everyone who has rallied around me throughout this period of grief. I lack words to express my gratitude. It is my prayer that the Lord will reward each one of them at the point of their needs. In their own days of sorrow, may they meet people who will stand by them and comfort them. I am so grateful. Thank you so much.”
