President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, describing the athletes’ achievements as a reflection of the resilience, discipline and excellence that define the Nigerian spirit.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the athletes for proudly representing Nigeria on one of the world’s biggest multi-sport stages.
Team Nigeria concluded the Games with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze, placing the country among the leading African nations at the competition. Tinubu said the medal haul was a testament to the hard work, determination and sacrifice of the athletes, coaches and support personnel.
According to the President, every Nigerian competitor, whether they reached the podium or not, contributed to projecting the country’s image positively before the international community.
“The medals won are a testament to your hard work and perseverance. Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity and pride,” Tinubu said.
He noted that the experience gained in Glasgow would prepare the athletes for even greater success at future international competitions, including the 2027 African Games and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The President also said the team’s performance should inspire young Nigerians to embrace discipline, hard work and patriotism through sports, stressing that athletics remains a powerful tool for national unity, youth empowerment and international recognition.

Tinubu commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, and the National Sports Commission, NSC, for their leadership and commitment to athlete development, describing their efforts as instrumental to the country’s success at the Games.
He equally paid tribute to the coaches, technical officials, medical teams, administrators and other support staff whose dedication ensured Team Nigeria’s successful participation in Glasgow.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible,” the President stated.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sports development, Tinubu pledged sustained investment in sporting infrastructure, athlete welfare and institutional reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s competitiveness on the global stage.
He said the Federal Government would continue strengthening sports institutions, upgrading training facilities and creating more opportunities for talented Nigerian athletes to excel in international competitions.
Sports analysts have described Nigeria’s Glasgow outing as another indication of the country’s continued strength in events such as wrestling, weightlifting, athletics, para-sports and boxing, disciplines that have consistently contributed to the nation’s medal success at major international championships.
The Commonwealth Games remain one of the world’s largest multi-sport events, bringing together athletes from member nations of the Commonwealth every four years. Nigeria has traditionally ranked among Africa’s strongest-performing countries, with its athletes producing notable performances across multiple editions of the Games.
With attention now shifting to upcoming continental championships and Olympic qualification events, the President urged Team Nigeria to remain focused and continue striving for excellence, expressing confidence that the country’s athletes will achieve even greater success in the years ahead.
