Argentina captain Lionel Messi has donated €80,000 to support the reconstruction of Spain’s Sierra3Oeste region following the devastating wildfires that swept through the area, destroying thousands of hectares of land, displacing residents and leaving widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.
The donation was made through the official wildfire recovery initiative established by the Community of Madrid and will help finance rebuilding projects, emergency assistance and recovery programmes for communities severely affected by the disaster.
Regional authorities have described the contribution as an important gesture of solidarity as thousands of residents continue to recover from one of the worst wildfire emergencies to hit the Madrid region in recent years.
President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, publicly thanked the Inter Miami forward for the donation, praising his compassion and willingness to support people beyond the football pitch.
“I want to thank him. The people of Madrid hope to welcome him soon and give him the applause he truly deserves,” Ayuso said while acknowledging Messi’s contribution.
The Sierra Oeste region was among the areas hardest hit by the fires, with flames spreading across 17 municipalities and destroying more than 27,000 hectares of forests, farmland and natural vegetation. Authorities said over 55,000 residents were either evacuated or ordered to remain indoors as emergency services battled the fast-moving blaze.
The fires also caused extensive damage to agricultural land, rural businesses, electricity infrastructure and residential properties, prompting the Madrid regional government to launch a large-scale reconstruction programme aimed at restoring affected communities and supporting displaced families.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, military emergency units and civil protection teams, spent several days working to contain the blaze amid extreme temperatures, dry vegetation and strong winds that accelerated its spread. Authorities later declared the fire under control before shifting attention to recovery and rebuilding efforts.

Messi’s latest donation has attracted widespread praise from football supporters and humanitarian organizations, many describing it as another example of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s commitment to helping communities affected by natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
The 39-year-old has long been involved in charitable work through the Leo Messi Foundation, established in 2007. The foundation supports projects focused on education, healthcare, child welfare and social inclusion, particularly for vulnerable children in Argentina and other parts of the world.
