The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has approved contracts worth N31.49 billion for the provision and installation of solar and modular hybrid solar streetlights across critical locations in the territory.

The approval was given at the FCT Administration Executive Council meeting in Abuja, where the council also considered proposals covering solid waste management, sewage treatment, public facilities and environmental maintenance.

Mary Amina Ahmadu, overseeing Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, AMMC, disclosed the decisions while briefing journalists on the outcome of the meeting, saying the streetlighting project is intended to improve nighttime visibility, strengthen public safety and enhance security along key corridors within the nation’s capital.

The latest approval builds on the FCT Administration’s ongoing efforts to expand solar-powered lighting infrastructure in Abuja.

In October 2025, Wike inaugurated the installation of integrated hybrid solar streetlights under the administration’s Light Up Abuja project, covering several districts and major routes.

The project was designed to reduce reliance on conventional streetlighting infrastructure and improve illumination across the city.

The FCTA had said the earlier project included districts such as Maitama, Central Area, Wuse, Asokoro, Katampe, Jabi, Garki, Gudu and Mabushi, as well as the Airport Expressway.

The administration also said the hybrid systems were intended to improve security and reduce the cost and challenges associated with conventional streetlight maintenance.

Beyond streetlighting, the FCT Executive Council ratified contracts for the extension of solid waste collection and management services across 40 delineated districts in the territory. The contracts, covering the period from March 1 to November 16, 2025, are valued at N5.96 billion.

The council also ratified contracts for the operation and maintenance of the Wupa Basin Sewage Treatment Plant for a 24-month period, at a cost of N2.21 billion.

The FCTA identifies the Wupa facility as one of the sewage treatment plants envisaged under the Abuja Master Plan and says the plant was designed to serve a population equivalent of about 700,000 people.

Other approvals include N1.52 billion for routine maintenance and management of facilities across selected FCT Administration departments and N106.16 million for facilities and public buildings under the AMMC.

The council further ratified a N488.39 million contract for the evacuation and routine maintenance of communal waste collection points along Umar Musa Yar’Adua Way for a two-year period under the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, AEPB.

The AEPB is responsible for environmental protection and management in the FCT, with functions covering solid and liquid waste management, environmental monitoring, conservation, health and safety, and enforcement.

Ahmadu said the collection, sanitation and maintenance interventions were aimed at sustaining environmental standards across the metropolis, while the streetlighting project would contribute to safer and better-illuminated urban corridors.

The series of approvals comes as the FCT Administration continues to implement infrastructure and environmental projects across Abuja and its satellite areas.

Wike said last week that the FCT had achieved more than 60 per cent implementation of its 2026 capital budget, despite delays in the release of funds.

The approved projects are expected to address several aspects of urban management, including street illumination, waste collection, sewage treatment and the upkeep of public facilities, with the FCTA stressing their importance to public safety, environmental sanitation and the maintenance of the capital’s infrastructure.
