Five people, including four students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, died in a road crash involving a vehicle in Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago’s convoy and another car.

The accident occurred at Gidan Mangoro in Minna on Monday, involving a Toyota Hilux carrying the Director-General of the Government House, Dauda Chikuba, and a vehicle conveying the students.

Four students and the driver of the Government House vehicle died at the scene, while Chikuba was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The governor’s convoy was returning to Minna after Bago and his entourage visited the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, to offer condolences over the death of the Sagi Nupe, Hajia Aisha.

The vehicle carrying the students was travelling towards Bida when the collision occurred.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as a head-on collision and claimed that the governor’s convoy was travelling at high speed.

“It was a head-on collision. We learnt that the convoy was at high speed when the accident occurred. It was a terrible accident,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying.

The witness added that Chikuba was taken to a hospital and might remain there for some time, while the bodies of the students and the driver were evacuated.

The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Superintendent of Police Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the accident and said an investigation was underway.

“The accident occurred this morning, and we are investigating it,” Abiodun was quoted as saying.
