The Ekiti State Police Command and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, have given conflicting accounts of an incident in Ado-Ekiti in which the activist sustained injuries.
While the police described the incident as an altercation at a restaurant, Sowore insisted that he and members of his team were attacked by armed men.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu said preliminary information indicated that Sowore was involved in an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti.
He said police officers were alerted, mobilised to the scene and rescued the activist.
The police spokesman added that Sowore sustained a minor injury and was taken to the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti for treatment.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Falale Adegoroye Michael, had ordered a discreet investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those involved and ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice.
The command urged the public to disregard reports that Sowore had been kidnapped, describing the narrative as misleading and capable of causing panic.
However, Sowore rejected the police account, insisting that he and his team were attacked by armed men.
In posts on his X account, the activist alleged that the attackers were government-sponsored thugs linked to the Ekiti Government House.

He also accused operatives of the Department of State Services of tracking and harassing his team since their arrival in the state.
Sowore said the incident occurred shortly after he participated in a radio interview at MIDAS FM 90.5 in Ado-Ekiti.
“There was no altercation! We were attacked!” he wrote.
He further alleged that security operatives seized CCTV footage from the restaurant, which he claimed captured the attack.
Photographs and videos shared by Sowore showed him with bandages on his hand and knee, while at least one member of his team was also seen receiving medical attention.
The activist also claimed that the police commissioner visited the scene but that the command subsequently downplayed the extent of the incident by describing his injuries as minor.
Sowore was in Ekiti ahead of the 2026 Ikogosi 17.5-kilometre marathon scheduled for Saturday.
As of Friday evening, the police investigation was ongoing. No arrests had been publicly confirmed, while the Ekiti State Government and the DSS had yet to issue detailed responses to Sowore’s allegations.
