Democrats are projected to take control of both chambers of the United States Congress, marking a major political setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
According to projections by CBS News, Democrats are expected to secure at least 218 seats in the House of Representatives, ending the Republican majority, while Republicans are projected to win at least 160 seats.
CNN also projects that Democrats will flip control of the Senate, giving the party significant influence over the final two years of Trump’s presidency.
The projected victory comes amid growing dissatisfaction with Trump’s administration, with Democrats making significant gains in areas that strongly supported the president during the previous election.
Trump, however, has said he would accept the election results, dismissing suggestions that the Republican losses should be viewed as a personal rejection of his leadership.
In an interview with Fox News, the president said he did not consider the party’s poor performance a direct blow to him.
The election also produced notable victories in several states. James Talarico is projected to win a Texas Senate seat, a breakthrough for Democrats in a state where the party has struggled to secure a Senate victory for decades.

In other developments, Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville is projected to win Alabama’s governorship, defeating Democrat Doug Jones.
Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte is also projected to secure a second term in New Hampshire, while Senator Marsha Blackburn is expected to become Tennessee’s first female governor after defeating Democratic challenger Jerri Green.
Meanwhile, voters in Virginia are projected to approve a constitutional amendment protecting same-sex marriage. The measure would remove existing constitutional language restricting marriage to a man and a woman and prevent the state from denying marriage rights based on the sexes of couples.
In Maryland, voters are also projected to approve a Democratic-backed constitutional amendment that could allow the state’s legislature to redraw its congressional districts ahead of the 2028 elections.
The move could create an opportunity for Democrats to challenge Republican Representative Andy Harris, who currently holds the state’s only Republican-controlled House seat.
Elsewhere, Michigan’s Senate race remains too close to call, with Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed addressing supporters and criticising attempts by political opponents to exploit divisions over his name and faith.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding some individual races, CNN’s projections indicate that Democrats have secured control of the Senate.
The results represent a significant shift in the balance of power in Washington and could complicate Trump’s legislative agenda during the remaining years of his presidency.
