France’s blood bank cooling system has been targeted by a cyberattack, with authorities confirming that its refrigeration units were remotely manipulated.
The French Blood Establishment disclosed on Thursday that the attack caused temperatures in some cooling systems to rise to dangerously high levels.
However, the agency said the temperature fluctuations were detected promptly, allowing it to take immediate measures to prevent damage to stored blood products and biological samples.
According to the EFS, no blood products or samples were affected by the incident.
Blood products and biological samples are stored in specialised refrigeration units before being distributed to healthcare facilities.

In a related development, French banking group Credit Mutuel Arkea has confirmed fraudulent transactions linked to a cyberattack, while assuring customers that the breach has been contained and their funds remain secure.
In a statement, the financial institution said it temporarily suspended some transactions as a precautionary measure after detecting the security breach.
The incidents come amid a growing wave of cyberattacks targeting refrigeration equipment, including refrigerators and freezers in supermarkets across several European countries.
