The Senate is currently holding an emergency plenary session to adopt the vote and proceedings of the plenary held last Thursday.
The sitting commenced at 11:55 a.m. with about 54 senators in attendance.
An emergency session was held to confirm the 10 Residential Electoral Commissioners , RECs , of the Independent National Electoral Commission , INEC, and to pass the 2023 supplementary budget for President Bola Tinubu to sign into law.
President Tinubu had requested the confirmation of INEC RECs and the passage of the 2023 supplementary budget.
One of the nominees, Etekamba Umoren, who is an ally of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was confirmed as the REC of Akwa Ibom State.
However, his appointment was met with controversy because he is believed to be a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress, which goes against the neutrality expected of a REC.
