The Organised Labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress on Tuesday ordered immediate shutdown of electricity and fuel supplies in Imo State following the brutalisation of the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, last week, by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.

Organized labor, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress , NLC , and the Trade Union Congress ,TUC, has ordered the immediate shutdown of electricity and fuel supplies in Imo State. This decision comes in response to the brutalization of the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, by the Nigeria Police Force last week.

Additionally, aviation workers have been directed to ensure the suspension of flights into and out of the state. These measures were determined during an extraordinary National Executive Council , NEC , meeting convened by the TUC and NUC.

The NEC has called for the immediate withdrawal of services and the shutdown of Imo State, starting at midnight on November 8, 2023. All public and private sector workers are expected to comply with this directive.

The move is in response to the arrest of the NLC president, Joe Ajaero, and the subsequent events in Imo State. The labor unions have given an ultimatum to the government to meet their demands regarding the incident, including the redeployment of the Commissioner of Police and the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the attack on Ajaero.

Failure to meet these demands within the stipulated time frame could lead to a nationwide industrial action.

The attack on Joe Ajaero and the subsequent actions by organized labor highlight the ongoing tensions and confrontations between labor groups and government authorities in Nigeria.

This incident has garnered widespread condemnation and has raised concerns about the state of workers’ rights and the rule of law in the country.
