The House of Representatives has, on Thursday, issued a mandate to the Chief of Naval Staff, and heads of relevant security agencies to take urgent and proactive steps against pirates terrorising fishermen on the Akwa Ibom State Waterways.

The Nigerian House of Representatives has expressed concern over the continuous killing of fishermen by pirates terrorizing the waterways in Akwa Ibom State.

The motion, sponsored by Alphonsus Uduak, highlighted the persistent activities of sea pirates and the adverse impact on the economy. The House condemned the killings and vowed to address the matter urgently.

The motion revealed that pirates killed nine fishermen, injured 15 others, and seized over 200 wooden boats within a few weeks. Fishermen are reportedly living at the mercy of pirates, forced to pay monthly royalties to explore the waterways or risk attacks.
