The arraignment of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria ,CBN, Godwin Emefiele, has been halted due to the ongoing industrial action by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria ,JUSUN, at the Federal Capital Territory High Court.
The strike, in solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress ,NLC, and the Trade Union Congress ,TUC, has disrupted judicial proceedings, impacting the legal proceedings involving Emefiele.
Emefiele’s legal challenges began when President Bola Tinubu suspended him from the position of CBN Governor on June 9, 2023. Subsequently, the Department of State Services ,DSS, confirmed his detention, leading to legal battles challenging the prolonged detention.
After Emefiele’s appearance in court on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, the DSS withdrew its charges in August but later re-arrested him.
Despite the legal complexities surrounding Emefiele’s case, the ongoing strike has affected the continuation of legal proceedings.
The strike has broader implications for the justice system, highlighting the challenges faced by the judiciary and the impact on individuals awaiting legal processes.
As the industrial action continues, stakeholders will be closely monitoring developments and seeking resolution to the impasse to ensure the resumption of normal judicial activities.
