Ms. Molly Phee, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, is set to visit Nigeria and attend the Economic Community of West African States ,ECOWAS, Heads of State Summit on December 10.
During her trip, Ms. Phee will engage with regional leaders and meet Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu.
The purpose of her visit is to consult with West African leaders on how the United States can best support regional efforts to restore Niger to a democratic path.
Discussions will focus on promoting security, stability, prosperity, and democracy in the Sahel region.
Ms. Phee’s visit comes four months after the coup in Niger Republic, where the military junta seized power and toppled President Mohamed Bazoum.

Western countries, including the United States, have condemned the military action and expressed support for efforts by the African Union and ECOWAS, led by President Bola Tinubu, to restore democratic governance in Niger.
Niger holds strategic economic and geopolitical significance due to its natural resources, including uranium and oil.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation in Niger, emphasizing the importance of returning to democratic governance and addressing security challenges in the region.
