The Turkish government has expressed its commitment to collaborate with Nigeria’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in the areas of social protection and emergency responses.

This announcement was made during a courtesy call by the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hidayet Bayraktar, on Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Ambassador Bayraktar highlighted the importance of a partnership between Turkey and Nigeria in managing humanitarian crises, emergency responses, and developing infrastructure for poverty eradication.

The Turkish government aims to sign two agreements early next year—one on development cooperation and the other on humanitarian disaster management.

The proposed collaboration includes the Turkish disaster management authority and Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency ,NEMA. The agreements are expected to address areas such as floods, natural disasters, sustainable development projects, and humanitarian and emergency response management.

Dr. Edu expressed gratitude for the proposed partnership, emphasizing that both countries stand to benefit significantly from this synergy. She outlined the areas where Turkey could contribute, including social protection, education, health, and other factors related to poverty alleviation.

The Minister disclosed plans to sign the agreements in January, following the completion of necessary documentation. The collaboration aims to establish a robust humanitarian and disaster management system in Nigeria.

Additionally, the Turkish Development Cooperation plans to open an office in Nigeria after the agreements are signed, facilitating direct outreach to different states through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The collaboration between the Turkish government and the Nigerian Ministry signifies a positive step towards addressing humanitarian challenges, enhancing emergency responses, and promoting development cooperation initiatives to combat poverty effectively.

The agreements are expected to usher in practical solutions and immediate implementation in the coming year.
