President Bola Tinubu has approved a 50 percent reduction in the price of interstate transport fares for Nigerians travelling during the yuletide from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.
The president also authorized free commuter rides on all train services during the period.
On Wednesday, December 20, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, announced this to State House correspondents at the Aso Rock Villa.
Alake also mentioned that air travel was left out of the initiative because it is aimed at the masses.
“It is in this spirit that the President is announcing through us that beginning tomorrow, December 21, Nigerians who wish to travel can board public transportation via minibuses and luxury buses at a 50% discount,” Alake said.

“This special presidential intervention will commence tomorrow, Thursday, December 21 and it will end on January 4, 2024.
“The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation, will collaborate with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation to ensure that this special presidential initiative is carried out smoothly.”
“I can tell you that all of the relevant stakeholders in that industry have been discussed with or engaged, and all of the parameters have been laid out, and the Minister of Transportation has the full details and is on top of the game,” Alake added.
“In fact, the presidents of the various transportation unions were met and everything is in excellent working order.” “This initiative is for the people.” Air travel is a luxury. The general public does not use air transportation. As a result, they are our primary target.
