The Port Harcourt Refining and Petrochemical Company in Rivers State is on test run, the Federal Government has announced.
After a protracted restoration process, the facility reopened on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, following the completion of the plant’s first phase of construction.
Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and Nigerians for their accomplishment when he escorted members of the Refinery Steering Committee to inspect the facility.
He clarified that following the Christmas break, refined petroleum products would begin to flow from the refinery.
Remember that the Port Harcourt refinery would start up before the end of 2023, as the government had stated several times earlier in the year.

Nigeria’s three refineries—in Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri—have been idle for years due to renovations costing the Federal Government billions of naira.
At the refinery, Lokpobiri said, “The meeting today coincides with the commencement of operations at the Port Harcourt refinery.”
Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, stated that the company’s workers put in over 9.6 million man-hours of work day and night to restart the refinery.
