An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Friday, sentenced a 55-year-old man, Benjamin Adegbola, to three years imprisonment for defrauding two families of N2.5millon in pretence to obtain a land survey plan for them.

Adegbola was found guilty on three counts of stealing, fraud, and obtaining under false pretenses despite his plea of not guilty.

The prosecution had proven the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, according to Magistrate Mr. S. S. Shotayo.

Adegbola was, however, found guilty by Shotayo and given concurrent sentences of two years for the first count, one year for the second count, and three years for the third count.

He also gave an option to the convict to refund  N1.7million to OkeOdebija and Todeuke or serve the jail sentence.

Earlier, during the trial,  the Prosecutor, Insp. Evelyn  Motim, told the court that the convict committed the offence between  March, 2020 and August 2021 at Oke-ilewo area in Abeokuta.

Motim claims that the prisoner deceitfully claimed to be a registered surveyor in order to defraud the families of Viadinu Todeuke and Oke Odebija of N2.5 million.

She said the prisoner received the money under false pretenses to obtain a registered land survey plan for the two families, but he was unable to fulfill this obligation and was unable to return the funds.

She said that the prisoner had taken the money and used it for his own purposes.

Nonetheless, she claimed that the offense violated Sections 484, 390(9), and 419 of the Ogun, 2006 Criminal Code Laws.
