The Nation tells the heartbreaking story of a college student in Nasarawa State who committed suicide after her lover abandoned her.
It all happened suddenly and unexpectedly. Even Miss Sarah Maikefi’s closest confidant did not believe that at her young age, she could take her own life in such an abrupt and horrific way.
However, in response to a failed relationship, that is precisely what the Nasarawa State University 100-level microbiology student did.
Her parents took great pleasure in her academic achievements for many years, using her as a source of pride as they planned her route to a sustainable future. However, Sara withheld her unhealthy intentions until December 8, the day after her second semester exam.
In the tragic event that transpired, she bid the world farewell, leaving no room for her rescue that occurred at an off campus lodge near Family and Friends Hotel, opposite the university campus.
Sarah, the lone child in a family of four, appeared healthy and robust until her passing. She waited for her second semester exams to conclude before retiring to her apartment and locking the door after the students’ first year of celebrations. She then took a keg and swallowed the contents, believing it to be a poisonous agrochemical.
It was reported that although students and neighbors attempted to mitigate the harmful substance’s effects by forcing some palm oil down her throat, it was already too late.
After finishing her semester exams on Friday afternoon, Sara’s cousin, Miss Patience Maikefi, who is also a student at the school, said the deceased had called her on the phone and expressed her exhaustion, saying she could not take it any more.
She remembered that the deceased ended the call abruptly, and that she tried several times to get in touch with her after that but she never answered. Later, the deceased student’s roommate called to arrange a meeting at the school clinic.
Speaking through tears, Patience said that she was told upon arriving at the university clinic that her cousin had passed away after ingesting a poisonous substance that was thought to be either an agrochemical or a sniper.
We met here early this year when she came for her four-year degree program, and we shared a good relationship as students,” one of the students, who went by Danjuma, told reporters. She was cool, collected, and kind.
“She used to come in here a lot with a young man that we used to see.” They seemed to have bonded and were usually in romantic situations together.
They actually displayed every indication of a couple in true love. However, we stopped seeing the guy around her a few weeks prior to the second semester exam, and she began exhibiting signs of concern.
“We made an effort to ascertain her condition, but she remained reticent and completed the exam for the second semester.
It’s true that she didn’t appear joyful or enthusiastic during the exam.

“After her last paper, she went into her room and didn’t come out for a while, which made us suspicious. When we knocked on her door, nobody answered.
At first, we thought she might have fallen asleep due to exhaustion from the long nights of the exam period. However, after some time had passed and she still had not emerged, we forced her door open and saw that she had taken a chemical, which was the reason for her extremely poor condition.
“We managed to get her to the hospital very quickly, but when we got there, they declared her dead.”
Danjuma claims that, Sarah exhibited symptoms of depression, but she did not leave a suicide note outlining the reason behind her actions.
“She did not drop any written note,” he stated. Before she passed away, she also didn’t discuss the reason behind her actions with anyone.
“We asked her to explain why she did what she did while we were transporting her to the hospital, but she remained silent. It was clear that the girl’s happiness was diminished by the guy’s absence from her life.
A close friend of the late Sarah, who asked to remain anonymous, said that she had called her earlier to let her know that her final semester exams were over and that she needed to relax a bit before heading to Akwanga.
She mentioned that she didn’t answer or return her calls for a few hours following their phone chat until she found out later that Sarah had killed herself.
She continued by saying that Sarah had been depressed since her boyfriend was said to have betrayed her, and she had contemplated suicide on several occasions.
She revealed to me that, despite her deep love for him, the man she held dear cheated on her and left her. She declared that killing herself would be the best course of action because she no longer wanted to live.
I repeatedly reassured her not to hurt herself because of another person, saying that I had experienced similar feelings in the past but had to learn to manage my feelings.
“I informed her that nothing is more significant than your life,” Think of yourself as injured, and give yourself time to mend.
“I am aware of how painful it is. Although what the man did to her was wrong, there is only one way to move past it. Although pain is unavoidable, you can make something beautiful out of it.
“Lean on and surround yourself with people who truly care about you.” It’s acceptable to experience pain occasionally, as it helps us to develop.
“Just keep in mind that every heartbreak will bring you to the ideal individual. I advised the late Sarah to do that.
In the Akwanga Local Government Area of Nassarawa State, the late Sarah was laid to rest a few days ago.
The investigation into the claimed suicide of the 100-level Microbiology student has begun, according to the Nasarawa State Police Command.
