The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates obtained from universities in Benin Republic and Togo.
The decision comes in response to concerns about Nigerians using dubious methods to acquire degrees from these neighboring countries with the aim of securing employment opportunities for which they are not qualified.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Augustina Obilor-Duru, representing the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education. The statement revealed that the suspension was prompted by an investigative report from an online newspaper, which exposed a Cotonou-based university that issued a degree certificate to an undercover journalist within just six weeks.

The federal government expressed its disappointment with the unscrupulous methods employed by some Nigerians to obtain degrees, emphasizing the need for credibility in educational qualifications. The decision to suspend the evaluation and accreditation of degrees from Benin Republic and Togo aims to address the misuse of academic credentials and ensure that individuals possess qualifications obtained through legitimate means.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of academic standards and preventing the circumvention of educational processes. As the suspension takes effect, individuals seeking recognition for degrees obtained from universities in these neighboring countries may face challenges in having their qualifications officially evaluated by Nigerian authorities.
