The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has denied all allegations of tracking or leaking phone conversations made by some individuals and groups in the social and alternative media.

In a press statement issued by NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, on Tuesday, the Commission stated that it has been inundated with enquiries by the media on the matter.

“The Commission denies the allegations in their entirety.

“By the provisions of the Nigerian Communication Act, NCA, 2003 and other extant Laws of the Federation, the Commission does not and cannot track nor leak telephone conversations of anyone” the statement emphasised.

The Commission disclosed that all allegations, which the commission takes seriously, have been reported to relevant security agencies for proper investigation and necessary action.

It further assured the public of its commitment to discharge its responsibilities in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the NCA 2003; and other extant Laws of the Federation; and global best practices.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission denies these allegations and advises the public to disregard them”, the statement concluded.

Credible News reports that the media adviser to Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the just concluded February 25 election, Valentine Obienyem, had alleged that NCC leaked the audio conversation between Peter Obi and Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church.

Obienyem alleged that NCC had set up a committee made up of some communications experts and are reviewing all calls made by Obi in the last three years, and especially now to see if he mentioned Interim Government or anything that will make him liable to prosecution for treason.
