The death toll from a landslide that hit a mining village in Davao de Oro province in the southern Philippines on Thursday has increased to nine, local authorities said Friday.
The Monkayo Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, in a social media post disclosed that rescuers recovered two more bodies, both women, near the houses buried by the mud and heaps of debris, saying that Police have confirmed the retrieval of the two women.
It added that one villager was critically injured.
Rescuers had recovered seven bodies, including children, on Thursday, a few hours after the landslide hit.
The search and rescue operations resumed on Friday in spite of heavy downpours that started on Tuesday.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council stated that over 70,000 families, or over 270,000 people, have been affected by flooding and landslides.
This is due to massive rains in four provinces in the Davao region on Mindanao Island.
