U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday officially announced that he will seek a second term as president in the 2024 election after months of hinting at a likely bid.
Biden had previously shown his intentions to be the Democratic candidate in 2024 but was waiting to make a formal announcement.
Both Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris have said they will run together.
“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America. And we still are. The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer”, Biden said in a 3-minute video announcing his run.
The video links images from the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol with protests over the Supreme Court decision overturning abortion rights.
“Freedom. Personal freedom is fundamental to who we are as Americans. There’s nothing more important. Nothing more sacred.
“Around the country, MAGA extremists are lining up to take those bedrock freedoms away.
“This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for reelection”, Biden explained in the launch video.
Credible News reports that Biden was already the oldest U.S. president in history when inaugurated in January 2021. He would be 86 years old at the end of a second presidential term, if realized.
His age has given Democrats pause, with doubts to whether he gives them the best chance at winning. But he is unlikely to face a serious challenge for the nomination.
Biden’s entry now sets up a potential rematch with former President Donald Trump, who announced in November that he would also make another run for office.
Credible News recalls that the announcement comes four years to the day from the launch of Biden’s 2020 campaign which he also declared via video. But unlike 2020, when there were 19 other candidates already in the crowded race, Biden is not expected to face any serious Democratic contenders this time around.
