Former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has shared his insights on the lessons learned from the elections and the current state of the nation.
Obi addressed the commitment of Nigerians to good governance, and the role of the elite class, and offered a critical analysis of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms in an exclusive interview with Ikechukwu Amaechi.
Obi emphasized that the biggest lesson from the 2023 elections was the commitment of Nigerians, particularly the youths, to good governance. He commended the active participation of the electorate, debunking the notion that Nigerians were complacent.
Expressing concern, Obi noted that many leaders in the elite class, including the electoral umpire, were not genuinely interested in good governance. He asserted that if the elites were committed to doing the right thing, the election results would have been different.
When questioned about President Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Naira, Obi expressed skepticism. He acknowledged that certain reforms were necessary but criticized the lack of visible gains and transparency in implementation.
Obi pointed out the widening gap between the official and unofficial exchange rates, emphasizing the need for holistic reforms across all sectors simultaneously. He emphasized that merely removing subsidies without achieving tangible positive impacts was insufficient.
Obi stressed the importance of addressing the overall cost of governance, advocating for simultaneous reforms in multiple sectors. He argued that the government’s efforts should be transparent, and people should see tangible results in areas such as education, health, and poverty alleviation.
In response to Tinubu’s assurance of impending economic recovery, Obi asserted that Nigerians would be the judge and criticized the unrealistic picture painted by the president. He emphasized the need for genuine efforts in reducing corruption and improving the security of lives and property.
Obi called for inclusive governance, citing his experience as a governor in Anambra State. He stressed the importance of engaging with traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure transparency and understanding of government policies.
Obi affirmed his belief that Nigerians share his vision of good governance. However, he highlighted the influence of elites in manipulating the system for their interests. He expressed optimism that the scales would eventually fall off the eyes of the people, leading to a demand for genuine and transparent governance.
Peter Obi reiterated his commitment to focusing on the present and future, emphasizing the need for a drastic reduction in the overall cost of governance and investments in priority areas for the benefit of all Nigerians.
