The Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume has advised interfaith leaders to strive and build bridges rather than breed discord to promote national development.

At the 80th birthday celebration of John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Akume emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence for an harmonious future, even as he noted that the event was not merely a celebration of life but also an opportunity for learning and inspiration.

“For those of us who are privileged to be here today, this is not just a gathering to celebrate his Eminence’s life, rather it a gathering of learning and inspiration because John Cardinal Onaiyekan is a living example of how faith, coupled with dedication and hard work can lead to a life of purpose and service and it is therefore worthy of emulation.

“Let us therefore reflect on this lesson in our private moment.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, may I use this opportunity to urge all of us, Christians, Muslims and people of all faiths to emulate the spirit of Cardinal Onaiyekan.

“Let us embrace his message of love, unity, and understanding, let us strive to build bridges rather than wars and work together to create a society where everyone feels respected, valued, and has a sense of inclusion,” said Akume.

The SGF commended the celebrant for his efforts in promoting interfaith dialogue and advocacy for peace and justice, noting that his service extended beyond the church walls.

He lauded the pivotal role of the archbishop over the years in promoting religious tolerance and understanding in Nigeria and the world, which according to him is increasingly divided by religious and ethnic tensions.

The Chairman of the occasion, Professor Obiora Okonkwo and host of the event, Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Rev. Ignatius Kagama, while appreciating guests present, called for a bridge in religious gaps for the development of the nation.

Credible News reports that the ceremony was graced by prominent dignitaries, including the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Erishi who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Emmanuel Echiegbu. The event also attracted religious leaders, traditional rulers and business moguls.

Cardinal Onaiyekan was the Archbishop of Abuja from 1994 to 2019 and also served as president of the Christian Association of Nigeria, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and Bishop of Ilorin Diocese in Kwara State.
