The daughter of the jailed ex-deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu, Sonia Ekweremadu, has expressed guilt over her parents conviction.

Sonia, 25, in an interview with BBC said she feels guilty that her parents were convicted because they were looking for ways to find a solution to her health condition.

She said although she understands why her parents were convicted, she disagrees with it from a “very biased perspective as their daughter.”

“I understand the conviction, however, I personally disagree with it. That is from a very biased perspective as their daughter. I will obviously always back my parents.

“However, the law has taken its course, we just need to move on as one family” said Sonia.

When asked about the man who was supposed to donate his kidney to her, she said she was not involved in the process.

Her words: “I didn’t have a hand in it; it was mostly my family that handled everything about my medical side. I don’t think things will ever be the same, already I feel guilty, because I feel all these happened because of me.

“My condition is called nephritic syndrome. Basically, my kidneys are small and they have loads of big holes in them. Either I stay on dialysis for the rest of my life, or I get a transplant. These are my two options. I have the APO-1 gene.

“So, to us, that kind of excluded the family, especially on my dad’s side, because they have quite a history of kidney conditions”.

Credible News reports that Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years, eight months imprisonment ; his wife, Beatrice was sentenced four years, six months imprisonment while the third accomplice, a medical doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta was jailed  10 years for plotting to illegally harvest the kidney of David Nwamini, the boy at the centre of their arrest and prosecution.

Sonia also apologised for making her family go through such a tortuous experience, saying that life may never be the same again.
