The Nigerian Medical Association’s Kano State chapter has commended Commissioner of Police Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel for his intervention in preventing assaults on their members by violent relatives of patients.
They also praised the Commissioner of Police for his proactive, kinetic and non-kinetic approaches towards ensuring law and order in the state.
Executive members of NMA in the state who paid the Kano police boss a special thank-you visit in his office also doffed their caps for him over his style of democratic policing.
Kano state branch Chairman of NMA, Doctor Abdullahi Kabir Sulaiman, who led his members to the Bompai headquarters of Kano State Police Command, appreciated CP Gumel for his efforts in protecting hospitals across the state, saying: “We are grateful for your timely intervention in the regrettable incident at Murtala Muhammad Hospital.”

He said, “This visit was prompted by the recent incidents within a couple of two weeks at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital Kano and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital respectively, where at the separate incidents a medical doctor was assaulted by patient relatives.
“We are grateful for your timely intervention at each of the unfortunate incidents. I was part of the team that received you at Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital during your visit.
“It is on the foregoing that the entire members of the NMA Kano chapter turned up massively to tell you that we all acknowledged the prompt response and support provided by the State Police Command and your the holistic manner in which the situation was addressed, and now there is peace at the hospital.
“We are here again to seek diligent prosecution of the assailant that attacked another member at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and to bring the idea that will put a stop to the increasing cases of assault on medical doctors in the State.”
Doctor Sulaiman further emphasized the need for greater security and protection for healthcare professionals, “to add value in the manner we shall be discharging our duties.
“It is on behalf of all the Doctors in Kano and by extension, Nigeria, we are here to show our gratitude for the professional way in which you are handling the situation and further request that you stand behind us to ensure that justice is served, and be as a deterrent to avert future occurrences.”
In his response, CP Gumel thanked the Doctors for the visit and assured them of his continued support in protecting lives and property, as well as ensuring law and order, in hospitals across the state.
The Kano police boss added that “the NMA is a crucial police partner and a professional association, and if there is a problem in that sector, nobody will be at peace.”
CP Gumel sympathized with NMA over the assaults on their members and assured them that they would never be left alone, as the Police Command is always ready to continue ensuring their safety and creating a safer working environment for all healthcare practitioners in the state.
He, however, reiterated the importance of cooperation between the police and the medical community in addressing security challenges.
