Segun Odegbami, former international footballer, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to consider hiring a local coach to lead the Super Eagles.
Odegbami, speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Saturday in Lagos, emphasized the need for Nigeria to find a more capable coach to lead the Super Eagles.
Peseiro, in a farewell message on his official social media handle, thanked the NFF and other stakeholders for the opportunity to serve.
“Unless we want to remain trapped forever in our colonial mentality, believing that only white coaches can lead us to success.”
Odegbami stressed that there are many Nigerians excelling in various fields who could contribute positively to the country, including in football coaching. He emphasized that football is not complicated and that many Nigerians have the qualifications to lead the national team to success.

“I no longer believe in colonial mentality. It’s time to end our reliance on foreign coaches. We need a Nigerian coach to lead our national team,” he remarked.
He also encouraged the former Super Eagles Coach, Peseiro, to gracefully step down from his coaching role with the team.
Odegbami expressed his view that Peseiro’s performance as coach of the Super Eagles was average.
He clarified that Peseiro did not resign but rather his contract ended and was not renewed.
According to Odegbami, Peseiro should gracefully step down while receiving accolades. He mentioned that the government awarded Peseiro, an honor unprecedented for a coach who did not win the AFCON but only secured second place.
He emphasized the need for a coach who can lead Nigeria to victory, expressing fatigue with coaches who fail to deliver tangible results for the national team.
