Fred Erhunmeunsee, Chairman of the Edo Football Association, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF,to select a local coach for the Super Eagles.
Following the expiration of his contract, Jose Peseiro stepped down as the head coach of the Super Eagles. Fred Erhunmeunsee, Chairman of the Edo Football Association, emphasized the need for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a local coach for the Super Eagles in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Benin on Monday.
Fred Erhunmeunsee emphasized the capability of Nigerian coaches to excel if provided with the right support and environment. He expressed a preference for indigenous coaches, citing their familiarity with local players and their progression. Erhunmeunsee noted that foreign coaches may not have ample opportunities to observe local players and monitor their development closely.

Fred Erhunmeunsee highlighted the prowess of Nigerian coaches such as Nduka Ugbade, Emmanuel Amunike, and Austin Eguavoen. He referenced the recent AFCON where a host country’s indigenous coach led the team to victory after a foreign coach was replaced. Erhunmeunsee emphasized that local coaches understand the players and can transform their playing style effectively, leading to success and recognition on the African stage.
Fred Erhunmeunsee reiterated his support for an indigenous coach, emphasizing that Africa has capable coaches. He praised Jose Peseiro for his strategic game plan that led Nigeria to the runner-up position in the prestigious African tournament. Despite acknowledging Peseiro’s achievements, Erhunmeunsee urged the NFF to appoint a coach with the capacity and mindset to secure World Cup and AFCON qualifications for Nigeria. Additionally, former international Segun Odegbami echoed the sentiment, urging the NFF to consider indigenous coaches for the Super Eagles’ coaching role.
