The Commissioner for Women Affairs Cross River state, Mrs Edema Irom has expressed the government’s commitment to always evolve policies that will protect the rights of women.

Irom made the expression while speaking to newsmen on Tuesday in Calabar in commemoration of the 2024 International Women Day, IWD, noting that the Gov. Bassey Otu-led government was committed to addressing the challenges being faced by women in the state.

The commissioner said that the state government had commenced the process of providing soft loans for women to start up businesses.

”The intention is to enable them to establish their own businesses and support their families.

”We are aware that many women are breadwinners, hence we are taking steps to support them to live a better quality of life,” she said.

Irom noted that the state government remained intolerant to any form of abuse against women.

He urged the public to report cases of human trafficking, rape, physical and emotional violence, female genital mutilation, forced child marriage among others to the ministry.

IWD is marked annually on March 8 to celebrate women who have positively impacted the society and to look at the challenges being faced by women with a view to tackling them.

Credible News reports that the theme for the 2024 IWD is: ”Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”
