Real Madrid held off an onslaught from RB Leipzig to secure a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.
The result means that Real Madrid advanced to the quarter-finals with a narrow 2-1 aggregate victory at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. Despite RB Leipzig having several clear scoring opportunities, Real Madrid managed to secure their spot in the last eight by increasing their intensity in the second half.
Scoring a crucial goal in the 65th minute through Vinicius Jr on a counterattack, Real Madrid took the lead. However, Leipzig’s Willi Orban equalized just three minutes later with a header, setting the stage for a tense final few minutes. Dani Olmo’s strike hit the crossbar, adding to the drama.
Although Real Madrid boasts an impressive Champions League record, having been eliminated in the round of 16 only twice in the past 14 years and winning the title five times during that span, Carlo Ancelotti’s team started cautiously in this encounter.
Leipzig continued to pose a threat, with Orban missing two opportunities in the second half by shooting wide. Real Madrid made a tactical change in the second half, bringing on Rodrygo for Eduardo Camavinga, which injected more purpose into their play.
Real Madrid seemed to secure their advancement when Toni Kroos intercepted the ball and passed it to Jude Bellingham, who advanced towards the Leipzig box. Bellingham then provided a pass to Vinicius, who had moved centrally from the left flank, and the Brazilian rifled a shot into the left-hand corner.
However, Leipzig responded swiftly, equalizing within three minutes as Orban headed in a cross from David Raum, getting ahead of Nacho in the process. The final 20 minutes saw several yellow cards issued, with Real Madrid under sustained pressure in their own box.
Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who had already made important saves in the first leg, once again came to Real Madrid’s rescue by making several crucial saves during the match. Leipzig came close to forcing extra time when Dani Olmo’s shot hit the crossbar in added time.

Despite not playing their best game, Real Madrid managed to do just enough to secure qualification for yet another quarter-final in the Champions League.
Real’s captain Nacho acknowledged that it wasn’t their finest performance: “Obviously we know it wasn’t the best game of the season. Sometimes you just have bad games and tonight was the case. It looks like a drama because of how we played but what really matters is we qualified for the quarters. Let that be a lesson for what’s to come.”
