Health professionals under the aegis of Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, NUAHP, working in Oyo State Government health facilities on Monday suspended their ongoing seven-day warning strike.

While directing all members to resume work, the union gave the government another 21 days to start responding to all her demands after which it would no more guarantee industrial harmony in the health sector in the state-owned health facilities.

The union’s unit Chairman, Mr Olanrewaju Ajani made this known in a statement he issued, alongside other executive members in Ibadan on Monday, disclosing that the seven-day warning strike, which began on March 4, terminated at 11.59 p.m. on Sunday.

Credible News reports that part of the union’s demands was the skipping of CONHESS 10 on its salary table, as applicable to those on Grade Level 11, as awarded by National Industrial Court. The union also demanded for restoration of call duty allowance for dental therapists, implementation of the new national hazard allowance for health professionals and release of promotion letters to qualified members who participated in the last promotion exercises in the state, among others.

“Having heard some positive steps taken by government to address our demands and the love for the masses, especially the civil servants, by Gov. Seyi Makinde, the expanded executive committee hereby directs all our members to resume duty from Monday, March 11, 2024,” it read.

While acknowledging the efforts of the Ministry of Health and State Hospitals’ Management Board, particularly the assurance given to members that their cases were being handled by the government, it however condemned what it called the role of some heads of departments and medical directors/medical officers in trying to victimize, force or coerce its members to work.

The union stated that no co-employee or employer had the right to victimize or intimidate any member for participating in industrial action called by it, following due process. Giving the state government 21 days within which to start responding positively to all its demands, the union said, “this is because after this, we can no more guarantee industrial harmony in the health sector and all our hospitals as our members will embark on an indefinite strike.

“We appreciate all members of the public for their understanding and they should know that all our agitations are to be able to provide them with quality and affordable health services in the state,” the statement added.
