Benue State House of Assembly on Thursday passed a motion calling on the governor, Hyacinth Alia to unfreeze the state government accounts for the smooth running of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDA’s.

This is even as the house frowned at the governor’s action for freezing the accounts for almost 10 months.

Recall that during his inaugural speech on May 29th, 2023, the governor ordered that all government accounts be frozen.

The governor said a ‘Post No Debit’ instruction shall remain in force until all signatories are changed.

The motion, moved by member representing Kwande West State Constituency, Pharmacist Thomas Dugeri, and seconded by the member representing Konshisha State Constituency, Rt. Honorable Cephas Dyako frowned at the continuous freezing of the accounts which they said has crippled the activities of the MDA’s, preventing the agencies from rendering effective services to the people of the state.

“The house is particularly worried that it is over nine months into the life of the administration and why is it taking so long for the Governor to initiate the process to render whatever transactions that were hanging on the government accounts ineffective adding that all cheques can only be valid for six months,” Dugeri said

However, house member representing the Kyan constituency, Shimawua Emmanuel moved a counter motion seconded by Alfred Emberga from Makurdi North calling on the house not to run into a hasty conclusion on why the state governor has allowed the accounts to be frozen.

Their counter motion failed through voice votes.

Speaker of the house, Hyacinth Dajoh passed the motion, calling on the governor to as a matter of urgency and in the interest of the state, unfreeze the state accounts for the smooth running of the MDA’s.

Meanwhile, during the plenary the house also screened two out of the eight members of the State Independent Electoral Commission and confirmed one.

Those screened were Honorable Terhemen Shom and Dr. Gisaor Vincent.

While Terhemen was confirmed, Dr. Vincent’s nomination was rejected for issues bothering his outing on social media where he was quoted to have made insulting comments against the Tiv nation.
