Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a left-winger took the oath of office on Tuesday to become Senegal’s youngest president.

At 44 years old, Faye pledged radical reform after winning a first-round victory in the presidential election.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at an exhibition centre in Diamniadio, near Dakar, in the presence of numerous officials and several African heads of state.

Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, also known as Diomaye, is a Senegalese politician and former tax inspector who became the 4th President of Senegal in 2024. He is affiliated with the banned party PASTEF and rose to prominence within the party quickly after its founding.

He played a significant role in designing Ousmane Sonko’s campaign program for the 2019 presidential election, in which Sonko finished third with nearly 16% of the vote.

When Sonko was arrested in February 2021 on charges of repeated rape, Faye took over as the general secretary of PASTEF. In an effort to win power, Faye worked to unite the opposition for the 2022 elections, leading to the Liberate the People alliance winning 56 seats.
