Captain Rasheedat Ajibade’s 43rd minute goal secured a narrow 1-0 victory for Nigeria against South Africa in the first leg of their 2024 Olympic Games final qualifying round tie held in Abuja on Friday night.
In the early stages, the hosts created more opportunities but failed to convert them. Chiwendu Ihezuo and Uchenna Kanu were active in Nigeria’s assault, posing issues for the South African defense.
Four minutes before halftime, the Super Falcons were awarded a penalty after Noko Matlou took down Ihezuo inside the box.
Ajibade sent Swart the wrong way, giving the home team the lead heading into the break. The Super Falcons came close to increasing their lead in the 52nd minute, but Swart produced a fantastic save to keep the ball out of the net.
