A section of Ilepo Market at Oke Odo, Lagos State, has been set on fire as hoodlums clashed with traders over bet money.

It was gathered that a fight broke out in the market situated in the area on Wednesday night and continued till Thursday morning.

Some shops were set on fire while goods were destroyed in the process.

“One of the traders in the market played lotto (bet Naija) and won N13,000 but was given N11,000 and because of the N2,000 balance which he was not given, fight started.

“The hoodlums from the nearby market used the opportunity to start looting and burning properties in the market. They looted a lot of shops, carted away food items and valuables.

“As I’m speaking to you now, we cannot enter the market, but police are currently there trying to calm the situation, I can hear sound of tear gas. We have lost millions of naira in the market,” a trader, Aminu Muhammad told reporters.

It was also reported that an early intervention by the police was restricted by the hoodlums.

However a fire service truck that drove into the market this morning was also forced to reverse after being pelted with stones.
