Senator Godswill Akpabio has emerged the President of the 10th session of Nigeria’s National Assembly.
Akpabio, a former SenateMinority Leader, polled 63 votes to defeat Senator AbdulAzeez Yari, a former governor of Zamfara, who scored 46 votes.
The lawmakers-elect had commenced voting on the floor of the Nigerian Senate at exactly 08:45am on a state-by-state basis and ended at exactly 09:15am.
Senator Ali Ndume nominated Senator Akpabio after reading the biography of the former Akwa Ibom governor. Senator Olamilekan Solomon seconded the nomination.
Similarly, Senator Ishaku Abbo nominated Senator Yari as Senate President.
Credible News reports that Akpabio who was the former Governor of Akwa Ibom also served as a Minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022. He represents Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial zone.
